Cuba is an extraordinary, enigmatic country and strikingly different from its Caribbean neighbours - whith an eclectic mix of historical occupations adding to its appeal. Colonised by the Spanish from the 15th century, much of the indigenous populations were decimated and replaced by African slaves.
It is an island steeped in the history of Spanish colonialism and post-war revolution, combined with some of the Caribbean's best beaches, the enduring pulse of Salsa and of course, the most sought after cigars in the world.
Cuba offers real variation for the visitor: from the vibrant cities of Havana, Trinidad and Santiago de Cuba to the quiet natural beauty of the West, rich in tobacco and coffee plantations. The long coastline of this large island boasts classic white sand beaches with a wide range of water sports enabling sun-worshippers to be as active or relaxed as the mood takes.
The British ruled for a short period in the 19th century, before the US took control of the island in 1902. Despite its many revolutions and somewhat turbulent history, Cuba today is a place of peace, beauty and ancient intrigues.
