| Crusing in the Galapagos Islands |
|
Lying directly on the equator and covering an area of almost 8000 km, the Galapagos Islands are located 1000km east of the Ecuadorian coast. The archipelago's 13 major islands, 8 minor islands and over 20 small islets were made Ecuador's first National Park. Part of Ecuador since 1832 and granted UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1978, the Galapagos Islands are considered to be significant natural wonders. Over many hundreds of thousands of years, the animals and plants have developed and adapted themselves to the conditions of the Galapagos, now differing markedly from their ancestors on the continent. The unique diversity of plant and animal life on the islands is a drawcard for ecologists and nature enthusiasts alike.
The islands are widely scattered and there is no better way to experience this natural wonder than cruising from island to island. There are two distinct seasons in the Galapagos Islands. The warmer season is Dec-May, humid days with the possibility of showers. In Jun-Nov the days are cooler and cloudier with an occasional drizzle. There are many cruising options in the Galapagos, from small motor cruisers, large cruise ships, and a selection of yachts. Diving options also available.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION Earlier this year, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa announced that the Galapagos Islands are at risk and declared that the archipelago's conservation and environment management is an issue of national priority. All visitors travelling to the Galapagos Islands will now be required to buy a USD 10 transit control card (Tarjeta de Control de Tránsito). It seeks to control visitors to the archipelago as tourists must state their status to avoid permanent stay in the islands. The value of the card will be in addition to the USD 100 fee for entrance to the Galapagos National Park. |
