Day 2 Quito
Few cities have the setting of Quito. The city sits in a hollow at the foot of the volcano Pichincha. The towering mountains and their snow-capped peaks surround the city. Quito’s charm lies in its colonial centre where cobble streets are steep and narrow. This morning you will be taken for a city tour travelling through the broad boulevards of the residential district. See the commanding Legislative Palace, its stone murals recording Ecuador’s history, the Sala Capitular at San Agustin’s convent, Independence Plaza – the town’s colonial centre and La Compania church with its glittering gold alters. Continue to the Equatorial Monument, which marks the exact Middle of the World, latitude 0. (B)
Day 3 Quito
Depart this morning on a full day tour of the beautiful Otavalo Valley. We travel north out of the city, along the Panamerican Highway through dramatic mountain scenery to the textile market of Otavalo, where guests will enjoy visiting the many stalls full of ponchos, scarves, blankets, wall hangings, woven belts (fajas), hats, handbags and much more. Here Otavaleños barter in silence, in marked contrast to the raucous noise of other markets; take your time to negotiate the best bargains. Then, proceed to Peguche, an Indian village very near Otavalo that is home to the artisans who do the weaving in their homes; guests can learn about their culture and everyday life. Lunch is at one of the charming country inns or haciendas of the area. (B/L)

On clear days, the perfect snow-capped cone of the Cotopaxi Volcano is quite a sight! At the foot of the volcano is a charming hacienda, where lunch is served in a room with Inca walls, perfectly preserved through the centuries -a true archaeological jewel.
