Join us on this unique tour exploring the colonial city of Antigua and stunning Lake Atitlan, visiting some of Guatemala’s most interesting and pro-active community projects along the way. Highlights include staying with a local family in Totonicapan, visiting a fair trade coffee cooperative, learning to make tortillas while lunching with the locals and visiting the colourful markets of Chichicastenango & Comalapa.
Itinerary
Day 1 Guatemala City/Antigua
Arrive Guatemala City Airport & transfer to the colonial city of Antigua and your accommodation.
Antigua may be the most outstanding and best-preserved colonial city in Spanish America. The Spanish Colonial style permeates every part of the town: its houses, churches, squares, parks and ruins, as well as its traditions and folklore. Antigua is a city of charm and colour where you can appreciate an overwhelming variety of attractive, handmade products that honour the traditions of generations of artisans.
Day 2 Antigua/Totonicapan
Visit the village of San Francisco El Alto this morning, nestled in the highlands and renowned for its bustling Friday market. Continue to Totonicapan where you will overnight at a basic homestay, a great opportunity to interact with local people. (BLD)
Day 3 Totonicapan/Lake Atitlan
Transfer to Lake Atitlan & your accommodation this morning; afternoon at leisure. (B)
Day 4 Lake Atitlan
Depart for a full day tour of Chichicastenango with lunch included. Try your hand at bartering at Central America’s most colourful market and admire the traditional Mayan dress of local women. (BL)
Day 5 Lake Atitlan
Visit the Friendship Bridge organization this morning to learn about their micro-credit loans for local women and participate in a cooperative meeting. (BL)
Day 6 Lake Atitlan/Antigua
Morning visit to Comalapa where you will visit the San Juan Market and admire the town’s mural, painted by the indigenous artists for which the town is famous. Continue to Antigua this afternoon. (BL)
Day 7 Antigua
Full day tour As Green As It Gets Fairtrade Coffee cooperative where you will learn about the production of coffee and sample the local beans. Continue to the Santiago Zamora Textiles cooperative where you will visit the local village & handcraft centre and enjoy a family-style lunch. (BL)
Day 8 Antigua
Day at leisure to relax and explore (B)
Day 9 Antigua/Guatemala City
Transfer to Guatemala City for your onwards flight (B)
