Itinerary
Day 1 Puerto Maldonado/Amazon
Arrive Puerto Maldonado airport and transfer to the Posada Amazonas office. Puerto Maldonado is situated at the confluence of the mighty Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers and is a bustling, booming tropical frontier town. After a short orientation of the town, we drive to the Tambopata river port. Here you will board boats for a one hour trip to Posada Amazonas. Enjoy boxed lunch along the way or lunch upon arrival at the lodge.
This afternoon’s excursion will be to the canopy tower. This 35 meter scaffolding tower is built so that you safely climb using the internal staircase. From the top you not only get spectacular views of the river and the surrounding forest but also excellent opportunities to observe birds including parrots, toucans and macaws. After dinner a video about the forest of Tambopata will be displayed.
A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.
Day 2 Amazon
We rise early this mornng for a Ceiba Trail Hike. We leave from the lobby at Posada Amazonas and embark on a two hour hike crowned by the largest tree in the vicinity: a giant ceiba tree. During the hike we will focus on the natural history of the rain forest and its principal taxonomic groups.
Return to the lodge for lunch before embarking on our afternoon outing, a visit the community’s ethnobotanical centre. Here the community has been registering the uses of medicinal plants from elders and planting, producing and distributing them for over ten years. After dinner an optional night walk to look for amphibians and insects.
Night walk. You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
Day 3 Amazon
After an early breakfast we visit a clay lick close to the lodge and next to the river. At times, this spectacle lasts for hours.
Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake. Enjoy a long, easy canoe ride around the lake looking for giant river otters, turtles, hoatzin, and wading birds. The giant river otters that are seen in Tres Chimbadas belong to a resident family of nine. Return to the lodge in time for a visit to a small parakeet clay lick.
After lunch, walk through primary forest with a community member and your naturalist guide, who will explain general aspects of rain forest ecology and natural history.
Day 4 Amazon/Puerto Maldonado
After an early breakfast change the engine for pedals and ride back to Puerto Maldonado on a mountain-bike. An early boat will take you to the Tambopata River Port in the Native Community of Infierno. From there you will bike back the 20 kilometers to Puerto Maldonado. The landscape will alternate fractions of forest and farms. At our Puerto Maldonado Office a shower will wait for you. Afterwards you will be driven to the airport to take your onwards flight. Your luggage will be transported separately.
