In this ancient city, you can still feel its grandeur walking through the archaeological buildings and its lush jungle surroundings. About Palenque

The ancient city of Palenque, built in the Late Pre Classic in the Mayan jungle of Chiapas. It was until the 500 AD that the city became the mighty capital of its region. In 1987, Palenque was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its great significance in the craftsmanship of the buildings and its sculpted reliefs with their Mayan mythology. The total area of the site is over 1,700 hectares. However, only 1,400 structures have been registered, making about only 10% of the region explored.

Begin your visit at the museum, which will give you a general idea of the city and the history of the region. You will see the many artifacts that preserve the culture. Here, you will also learn about the relationship of this city with the rest of the Mayan world.

After the museum, enter the archeological path to explore the architectural delights of this old civilisation. Walkthrough the site while howler monkeys, jaguars, colourful birds, and other local fauna roam around the Lacandon Jungle. The site includes the many temples, palaces, and ball courts that tell you stories of creation. The site exhales the magic imbued in those mystical stones.

Palenque is the starting point of a beautiful holiday. From there, you can explore the natural wonders of the North of Chiapas. Visit the archaeological site of Toniná in the South. Another option is to head southeast through the Lacadon Jungle to find the majestic prehispanic cities of Bonampak and Yaxchilán.
