Caño Cristales (the Crystal Channel) is more commonly known as the ‘River of Five Colours’ or ‘Liquid Rainbow’. And this unique biological wonder is certainly something to behold. For most of the year it looks like any other river. But from July to November an endemic water plant, the Macarenia Clavigera, provides an explosion of colour. This naturally occurring algae blooms a brilliant red, but also white, black and yellow.

Of course, the main attraction is the stunning beauty of the Liquid Rainbow. But you’ll also discover hidden rockpools and waterfalls. During the day you will explore forest trails and by night enjoy the distinct local culture of the region.

You can get to Caño Cristales via a 90-minute flight from Bogota to La Macarena. In town there is a small range of simple accommodation.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Bogota/La Macarena

In the morning transfer to Bogota Airport to take a direct flight to La Macarena. Upon arrival reception by a local guide and transfer to the hotel. Welcome speech. Once checked into your hotel you make your first excursion along Guayabero River to Cristalitos or by foot to Caño Piedra. Lunch will be given during the eco hike. Return to La Macarena Town, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2 La Macarena

In the morning, transfer to the Rio Guayabero port to take a boat over the Guayabero river, after 20 minutes continue by land transport from the point of disembarkation to Cajuche spring. Begin of the eco hike to Caño Cristales, also known as the 5 colours river, red, green, yellow, blue and black can been seen. Enjoy the beautiful river and continue walking to see different waterfalls. Visit the central, left or right arm according to CORMACARENA permits (La Macarena Regional Autonomous Corporation). Lunch during the excursion. Return to the hotel in La Macarena. In the evening enjoy music, dance and gastronomy of the region.

Day 3 La Macarena/Bogota

In the morning, depart to Cristalitos, El Mirador, Caño Piedra or other arm, depending on the permits of Cormacarena. Return to La Macarena Town for your flight to Bogota.
