Explore the endless white plains of salted distort perception, lagoons coloured in vivid green, blue and red dot the landscape. Add flocks of Pink Flamingos for a truly surreal experience. Follow the adventure by travelling to the Atacama Desert, the driest desert on earth, rich in Pre-Columbian culture, where otherworldly landscapes – extensive salt lakes, volcanos and geysers – are framed by the Andean mountain range.
Arrive in La Paz and transfer to your hotel.
This morning you will be transferred to La Paz Airport for your flight to Uyuni. On arrival, you will be met by your driver and guide and you will depart on the most surreal and breathtaking overland trips in South America. Visit the Colchani Salt Mine and see how locals traditionally extract the salt before travelling onto Tahua and overnighting in a hotel constructed entirely from salt.
Please note that during the wet season (November to March) the salt plains can be flooded, making it impossible for vehicles to reach Incahuasi. In this case, you will visit the train cemetery outside of Uyuni before continuing to Colchani to see how the locals extract salt by hand. You will travel as far onto the salt plains as possible, an incredible experience in the wet season as the entire salt flat is covered with water and perfectly reflects the sky. Please note that all itineraries in the Uyuni Salt Plains are subject to changes pending local conditions.
Drive to Isla Incahuasi. It has enormous cacti growing on the island and stunning 360-degree views of the salt plains. Continue across the Altiplano to Alota and Villamar.
Today’s highlights include a visit to Laguna Colorada with a population of Pink Flamingos and the Geysers Sol de Mañana around the rim of Laguna Chalviri with natural hot springs. Continue through Las Pampas de Salvador Dali and on to Laguna Verde which is located at the base of the Licancabur Volcano. From here you cross the border into Chile and continue to San Pedro de Atacama.
Day at leisure. Consider an optional full-day tour to Tatio Geysers.
Transfer to the airport or ask us about extending your stay in Atacama.
