Patagonia, a vast, sparsely populated territory, spans the southern reaches of South America, shared by both Argentina and Chile. It is a region of remarkable geographical diversity, with arid steppes to the east and the dramatic, glacier-filled Andes to the west. In this blog, we will delve deeper into region 5 (see map below) and uncover the secrets of El Calafate and El Chalten and why you should consider visiting the “other side” of Patagonia – Argentina Patagonia.
For those embarking from Australia, the journey to El Calafate, or anywhere in the Patagonian region, typically involves a multi-leg flight. You will connect through a major South American hub such as Santiago, Chile, or Buenos Aires, Argentina, before taking a domestic flight to the area of your choice. While the journey is long, the destination justifies the means. Australian citizens benefit from a 90 day entry without a visa*(based on current information as at May2025 – may change).

The Scale of Patagonia
Patagonia is immense, encompassing approximately 1,043,076 square kilometres (402,734 square miles). This equates to an area larger than 80% of the countries on the planet, and is simultaneously the least populated region on the planet.
Argentina Patagonia – home to El Calafate and El Chalten, constitutes part of the eastern portion of this vast territory, while the western portion is mostly owned by Chile.

El Calafate itself is a charming town, strategically positioned on the shores of the breathtaking Lago Argentino.
Optimal Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Argentina Patagonia is up to your individual preferences. However, for those seeking a balance of favourable weather, extended daylight, and the vibrant onset of the Patagonian summer, early December is a great option.
This period offers the advantages of shoulder season, with fewer crowds than the peak summer months of January and February, and the natural environment is still in bloom. Of course, anytime during late Spring, Summer, and early Autumn are good options. Most regions of Patagonia are shut down during the winter, but this can still be an option for skiing enthusiasts.

Advantages of visiting Argentina’s Patagonia
From a travel planning perspective, the region surrounding El Calafate offers several compelling benefits:
- Diverse Accommodation Options: Unlike other destinations in Patagonia, which are defined by all-inclusive resorts, El Calafate provides a lot of variety in how you experience it. This allows for flexibility, enabling you to base yourself in the town and undertake cost-effective day tours to various attractions for a fraction of the cost.
- Convenience for Day Excursions: El Calafate’s strategic location renders it an ideal base for exploring key attractions, including the Perito Moreno Glacier and other sections of Los Glaciares National Park, on day trips. This eliminates the need for frequent accommodation changes, fostering a more settled travel experience. Note that El Chalten is a 3 hour drive from El Calafate and we do recommend staying in both places if you have time.
- Accessible All-Inclusive Resorts: For those who prefer the convenience of an all-inclusive package, the El Calafate area also features more moderately priced options compared to certain other Patagonian destinations.
- Enhanced Serenity: While Patagonia’s allure is increasingly recognised, the El Calafate region generally experiences a lower volume of annual visitors compared to, for instance, Torres del Paine in Chile. This translates to a more tranquil and less crowded experience.

The Perito Moreno Glacier
A natural wonder accessible from El Calafate is the Perito Moreno Glacier. Perito Moreno maintains a dynamic equilibrium, exhibiting periods of both advance and calving. Witnessing the spectacular sight of colossal ice chunks detaching from its towering face and plunging into the frigid waters of Lago Argentino is an unmatched experience.

The exceptional Explora El Chaltén warrants particular mention. Positioned within the 14,000-acre Los Huemules Conservation Reserve and bordering Los Glaciares National Park, this lodge provides excellent access to the region’s best activities.

Eolo | Patagonia’s Spirit
The Eolo hotel is another excellent choice for accommodation in the El Calafate region. It is located between the main city of El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier, built on the land where the first creole and European immigrants first set foot. The enormous 10,000-acre property is perfect for horseback riding, mountain bike rides, trekking and bird watching.
The distance from the El Calafate, a city already relatively quiet compared to other regions of Patagonia, makes it even more private and special. All the spaces in Eolo have outdoor views, and are all centered around the central garden. Here, you can enjoy the pristine air of Patagonia, while being protected by the harsh Patagonian winds. Eolo, like El Chaltén, offers a variety of activities, both on the hotel grounds and in the surrounding Los Glacieres National Park. See the glaciers by any means you like, including hiking, kayaking, a boat trip, or just from the comfort of a viewing point. Larger, more inclusive day tours are also available, combining the landscape and history of Patagonia into one adventure.
The EOLO Patagonia is priced from approximately USD $3,100 per person (All Inclusive) for a four night stay.
Note – price excludes Christmas and New Year and is based on 2025 season estimates. For availability and current pricing for your travel dates, contact Contours Travel Australia on 1300 135 391.
