Whale sharks are the largest fish in the sea, reaching lengths of 40 feet or more! Whale sharks have massive mouths and are filter feeders. They feed almost exclusively on plankton and small fishes and pose no threat to humans. Whalesharks are called whales only because of their size. This enormous fish is not a mammal, they belong to the group of cartilaginous fishes, making them more sharks than whales.
Even though they are sharks, these giants are so gentle that snorkelers and scuba divers can swim alongside them without any danger. Swimming next to them is an incredible experience that should be done with the best operators. We encourage those that promote the preservation and conservation of this species, as they are considered to be vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. This is why it’s so important to do this activity only with mindful promotors, like the ones we work with!
Mexico has some of the best dives sites in Latin America. It’s also known as one of the world’s best destinations for swimming with whale sharks. These incredible creatures frequent the east coast for a few months, and July is the best time to spot the huge shoals.
These noble giants pass along the coast of the Yucatan peninsula from mid-May to mid-September. They enjoy the subtropical waters and you can probably find them in other parts of the world. However, just a few miles away from Holbox beach we find the largest aggregation of whale sharks in the world!
