ITINERARY

Day 1 Calama/San Pedro de Atacama

You will be transferred from Calama Airport to the stunning Awasi Atacama hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. At Awasi, excursions are private (with a guide and a vehicle assigned to each villa) and are planned according to your pace and preferences. The times, duration and routes of each excursion are defined in line with your special interests and wishes.

Day 2 San Pedro de Atacama

Awasi offers guests exclusive access to their own private guide, driver and vehicle during their stay at the lodge. Rather than choosing from structured tours, guests are free to design their own itineraries- all with the help of expert guides. Choose from excursions by van, hiking, biking or horseback riding. Suggested excursion options include:
– Toconao & Atacama Salt Flats: an easy half-day trip by car. Drive to Toconao and visit the church and historic bell tower before continuing to Chaxa Lagoon on the edge of the salt flat. Here you can observe flamingos and other native bird species. A spectacular place to watch the sunset.
– Moon Valley: just a 15 minute drive away we find the otherworldly landscape of Moon Valley. Stop at various lookout points to observe the unique geological formations created by wind and water erosion.
– Miscanti and Miniques: a full-day excursion that takes you to the highland lagoons of the altiplano, which are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve.

Day 3 San Pedro de Atacama

Another day to explore the region with your specialist guide. Suggested excursion options include:
– Tatio Geysers: depart very early in the morning to arrive at El Tatio geothermal fields at dawn. Here you can see the famous geysers, gushing steam and hot water columns metres into the air. Enjoy breakfast as the sun rises over this incredible landscape. Return to the hotel around midday.
– Rio Grande: visit the ancient petroglyphs in Yerba Buena before continuing to the pretty town of Rio Grande. From here you can appreciate stunning views of the valley, farming terraces and giant cacti that stud the landscape. Picnic lunch is served next to the river.

Day 4 San Pedro de Atacama

Another day to explore the region with your specialist guide. Suggested excursion options include:
– Peine and Tilomonte: a full day excursion out to the remote village of Peine where you can visit the church and the historic ruins of Peine Viejo. Continue to the desert oasis of Tilomonte, a semi-deserted village of beautiful limestone houses. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of a carob tree engraved by Spanish Conquistadors.
– Gautin & Gatchi: drive to the valley of Gautin, Valley of the Cacti. From here we hike along the Vilama River, observing the profusion of cacti, geological formations and waterfalls. Our hike will take us to Gatchi, an archaeological site where you can see the ancient corrals used by Atacamenian people.
