Did you know that you can do two of the most popular and iconic treks in South America during the same trip? Yes, that’s right! It is possible to combine Torres del Paine’s W trek and Machu Picchu Inca Trail. Why not be the envy of your friends and make these two bucket list adventures a reality? And what’s more, there are some great reasons for combining these two destinations!
1. Seasonality
Firstly, in order to do both the Inca Trail and W Trek on the same trip, you need to time your journey for either early or late season in Torres del Paine. This means either September/ October or March/ April, therefore avoiding the peak summer months of the southern hemisphere. Traveling to Patagonia during these months means lower prices and a lot less crowds. And what’s not to like about that?
If you’re traveling in the second half of the year, it makes more sense to hike the Inca Trail first. September/ October are fantastic months for hiking the Peruvian Andes with dry, sunny days and crisp (ok, cold) nights. But if you’re traveling in March/ April then we’ll save the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu for last! This is because the southern hemisphere summer is also the wet season in Peru! And you want your boots to stay dry on the Inca Trail, right?
2. Ease of travel
Another great reason to combine these treks is the ease with which you can travel between Chile and Peru. In fact, there are now direct flights between Santiago and Cuzco, making it easier than ever to link these two destinations.
3. Preparing for your treks
Finally, we find that many of our clients like to physically prepare for these treks. So why not give yourself something to really work toward, and get in shape for not one, but two amazing hikes?
Both treks can be considered moderate but there are a few factors that can make each one tricky in their own way. For the Inca Trail, the altitude plays a part in determining how you will feel at the end of each day. That’s why we always recommend at least three days acclimatisation before starting the Inca Trail. In Patagonia, the wind is the most important factor and can make the difference between a relaxed amble, or a strenuous slog against the elements.
